Sailfish and Dorado caught in Cagayan

A sailfish would probably be one of the fishes that would fulfill the fantasy of any angler. The scream of your the reel upon hookup and peel your line in a matter of a few seconds, and the fantastic tail walks would definitely bring any angler into orgasmic delight. The Philippines is blessed to be in migratory path of these magnificent creatures.

Pelargics, such as the sailfish, are known to stay near warm ocean currents. The second largest current, the Kuroshio current, starts from the northeastern tip of the Philippines and carries a large stream of warm water flowing upwards along the east coast of japan. This brings about the abundance of the sailfish in the area of San Vicente and thus labels Cagayan as the sailfish capital of the Philippines.

Cagayan Valley, not to be confused with Cagayan de Oro, is 650kms away from Manila. That would translate to about 10-14hrs drive. Florida Bus lines, Victory Liner and Baliwag Transit have daily routes to Santa Ana, Cagayan. Alternatively, Asian Spirit and Air Philippines have daily flights each to Tuguegarao. From there, you will need to catch a mini bus to Santa Ana.

Sailfish in Cagayan are abundant from April to October, peak season is from May to July. Unfortunately, June and July are the start of the rainy season in the Philippines and the weather can get quite unpredictable.

Once there, most boatmen are familiar with the local technique of catching sails. It will be trolling flying fishes around 7-8″ long. The boatman catches sails using handlines so better bring your gears with you. A 6-7ft boat rod, matched with a reel that cold hold 300-400m of 30-40lbs would be a great setup for these sails.

Sailfish caught in Calubcob, San Juan, Batangas

Other than Cagayan, you can also catch sailfishes in San Juan, Batangas during the months of October to December where they push to warmer waters during the cold season. Most probably, this is also their spawning season. Reports of catchas vary fromsmall 15kg ones to 30-40kg! Come January and February, sailfishes can be found in the coastal waters or Zambales, Pangasinan and La Union. However, during these months, they seem to be “undersized”, ranging from 5 kilograms up to 28 kilograms, most probably juveniles.

Its September, the first of the BER months. By next month, sailfishes can be found around the Batangas shores. No need to go to endure that 12-hr travel to Cagayan to catch these beauties!

Capones and Camara Islands are small Islets located in the area of Pundaquit town in San Antonio, Zambales. A mere 45 min. bus ride from Subic or a 3-hour from Manila (Victory Liner station in Monumento)

JL, Randy and I, already went there a month or two ago. We came there almost after a storm, ended up soaking wet, and caught a few small snappers, groupers but none were notable sized. I caught two papakols around a kg each but I wasn’t able to take a pic. I think it’s still in the freezer though, might be a worth to bring it out and take a pic.

The Bus Ride

We only know of two Victory Bus Stations that ply the Olongapo-Zambales route. The last trip of Victory Pasay is 11:00pm, which was too early for me. However, Victory Monumento’s last trip was 12:00am, perfect! I left Pasig (my house) around 10:45pm, on route to Monumento via EDSA. Upon exiting the Cubao Ilalim, I looked at the Victory Liner station to see if I can find a hint of their routes. I did notice a signboard that says Olongapo, Subic, Iba, Sta. Cruz. They do ply the zambales route, but the question is what time are the trips. I’ll give them a call next time to check the schedule. It might save me a P100 taxi fare next time.

I got to Victory Monumento around a little past 11pm. And just as before, no more tickets are being sold at the ticket counter. It’s chance passenger time. I lined up at the chance passenger area and I was the 4th in line. I seemed that the bus has more than 4 extra seats so I wasn’t worrying. After a short while, they allowed the chance passengers to get in, and I took a seat #17. The bus backed up and there was a man who got in the last minute and he was looking at the bus numbers on the windows and stop at my row. I said to myself, uh oh, then I heard a voice say. “Boss, ako yung #17″ and he showed me a ticket. Oh well, I stood up and gave the seat to the guy but I was praying that I won’t be standing up until Olongapo. I asked the conductor who was first so alight the bus. He mentioned that there were two going down at San Fernando, Pampanga. San Fernando is only 45 minutes away and I guess I can stand for that long. And as it goes, I got a seat at San Fernando and doze off until Castillejos, Zambales. I just love taking a nap in buses. :)

I arrived at San Anotonio, Zambales around 2:30am with a grumbling stomach. A short walk towards the side of the town hall brought me to a small carinderia serving lugaw ang mami. I ordered mami for myself and took a seat. There were a group at the other table, a gay with her two papas glancing towards me. One of them asked if I was going fishing and I replied, yeah I am. According to him, the bites may be fewer since the water in the area is relatively clear. Not a good sign. I continued the chit-chat until I finished my mami, bid farewell to my newly found acquaintances and hailed a tricycle to Canoe Island Resort, where Alan and JL were already staying the night before.

Canoe Island Resort – Pundaquit, Zambales

Canoe Island Resort is one of the better places to stay in Pundaquit, Zambales. It can be considered as a Class A resort in the area with beach front cottages for P1,500 a night and pool side cottages for P1,800 a night. It has a bar and restaurant where meals are decently priced (around, P200 for a complete meal) or you can buy meat, seafood, vegetables from the market and have them cook it for you for only P100. Alterntively, they have a place where you can bring uling ( charcoal ) and make ihaw-ihaw and probably even cook rice, soups and other viands. Here are a few pics for your to enjoy.

If you will be arriving at Canoe Island Resort at that time of day, make sure that you mention it to the staff since they lock the gates a little after midnight. I was trying to call JL and Alan but it seems that their phones didn’t have any signal. I had a flash light with me and continued to flash it on the cottages, hoping that the gatekeeper will notice me. A few minutes after, Mang Boy, the gatekeeper and he opened the gate. I introduced myself as a friend of JL, a regular of Canoe Island Resort. He is known by almost all of the staff so a name drop would definitely give you a key to the closed door. It was only 3:30 am, still too early to wake up the guys so I took a liberty of unloading my stuffs on one of the huts, lied down and took a short nap. Its a great feeling to take a nap in a nipa hut with a bamboo papag and gentle beeze to keep you cool. I think it was after an hour when I was awoke by the sound of a door opened. JL got up and looked for me. I grabed his attention and told me that we were leaving by 5:30am.

It was 5:00 am, Alan and his kids were up, JL was up, and after a quick breakfast of GloBake Siopao, coffee and sprite we were off. ( One siopao, a cup of coffee and a gulp of sprite wasn’t really enough for me. Too bad there were only 5 siopaos available that day. )

Since this was a supposedly “Family Outing” to start with, we only planned to do bottom fishing. Alan decided to leave early so he’ll just be fishing for half a day. Same goes for me. I’m not really fond of bottom fishing but just to scratch my itch and wet my line, I’m giving it a go. hehehhe.

Hooking up a whole shrimp didnt’ get any strike. We were only able to catch fish when we peeled the shrimp and cut it in small pieces and hook it up on #6 hooks. There were alot of bites that day but the fishes are small. We were able to catch goat fishes, red groupers and papakols. Being the “trying hard” responsible angler that I am, I released all of my catches back to the sea and give them chance to grow more.

Dynamite Fishing

In the course of our fishing, we heard several blasts from afar. I have read that there are still a few who practice dynamite fishing, but I never realized that in Pundaquit, they do it in the middle of the day! Our boatman, Mang Boy, affirmed that was indeed a Dynamite going off, and the practice is still rampant in the Pundaquit Area. This is such a sad fact to an otherwise great destination. If only the authorities gave a little bit more effort in protecting the environment… No use complaining though, I think a couple of anglers can make a diffence. ( do I hear another project.. )

There wasn’t any notable catch that day so we decided to head back shore early since the noon day sun was already scorging.

Fisherman’s Tale

I rode with Alan back to Manila and left around 1:00pm. JL and Amy stayed for some island hopping. During my first visit at Pundaquit, I had a chance to do some chit-chats with a local bangkero, Romeo. I’ve been telling JL to hire Romeo before but of course his preference was with his boatman, Julius. This time, JL’s bangkero wasn’t and it was Romeo who brought them Island hopping. JL was impressed on how Romeo handled the boat and was even more impressed on how Romeo wanted to share his fishing spots with us. Apparently, the tanigue season is almost in and big ones can be caught around an area, an hour from Pundaquit.

Hmm… That may call for a round 3. But this time, I’ll go trolling..

Kit started a thread on filipinoanglers.org forum www.filipinoanglers.org/phpBB3/

This is a bit confusing for me, a thought in my head, and I’m just free typing…so here we go.

How do you earn your mark in fishing?

Would it be when you keep yourself to a group of people that praise you to be a good fisherman?

I’ve never been comfortable with any title. Thats why I refused to be labeled as anything…I’m just Kit.

Ever since I started fishing, I have learned not to rely on anyone for my fishing. Not my father, not my friends.

I am fortunate to have a really open mind on a lot of things. Fishing is no exception. this is one of the things that I really love doing, not for the catch mind you, but for the ACT itself. catching something is nice, but for me, just the mere fact of fishing and doing something fishing related is therapy. People close to me know that “I think too much” analyzing and trying to see the logic in everything. Thats all the time except for when I’m fishing. I don’t think, I don’t try to rationalize everything. I think it has something to do with spending a lot of time fishing, that it just works like clockwork…my second nature.

I work hard to learn new tricks on my own, never stop honing systems that work for my style of fishing and finding new things that work. Show me a piece of water; I will find fish, and you know what, I will catch fish. Anyone is more than welcome to challenge me on this…it’s a brave statement to let go of, but hey, if anyone is up to it, I’m sure the last thing its going to be is boring. let’s try this: anyone, anytime, any where…no boatmen involved. We drive the boat, we look for the fish, we catch the fish…in an area not familiar to the participants.

Some have seen this happen in front of them. Some embrace it, some don’t. I don’t really mind, I’m not fishing for anything. I’m not out to impress the world…I just love to fish.

I’m also not one of those punks that don’t share information. “Secrets” to keep the edge? Thats just plain selfish and archaic. I’ve spent hours with people that ask me what I can share, and I do. Often times, I dig in to my tackle box and give them what I have, leaving them with something they could use, I have limited resources, but I’m just like that.

For me, earning your mark isn’t just because you catch fish, because you have all the expensive equipment, all the latest lures or coz people around you praise you for what you accomplished.

As far as I’m concerned, I haven’t made my mark yet…and you know what? I really don’t care if I have or not. For me Fishing is a way for me to stop thinking…

Fortunately for me, I’m confident that I’m doing the right things. On shore, offshore, on the rocks, off the beach, in a pond, freshwater, saltwater, brackish…and I do this all alone; no one to show me where the fish are, what lures to use, how fast to reel in…what retrieves, etc. I love the part where I learn all of these things all on my own. If I catch something, I know that It’s all me. Because after all, If someone shows me how it’s done, where the fish are, what lures to use…I’m not really doing it on my own am I? I would be following him/her…AND That my friends, Isn’t really how I would like that.

I Stand by what we, here at Filipinoanglers.org PROUDLY live by: (A “Kitism” according to Bong) WE CATCH, THEY WATCH

This had me stop and think a little on what my mark is. It didn’t take too long to realize that I don’t. But deeper thought brought out one thing. Do I have to earn a mark? Do you really need to brag about your catch? And do you really need to hear praises from other anglers telling you how great an angler you are. So, here was my response.

Kit, is it a bad thing if someone doesn’t reach for a mark? or doesn’t set up a mark for him to reach?

I like DIYs and home mades and I like to try them out to see if it works too.

But, I don’t seem challenge myself anymore. Before, I used to say to myself, “today, you’ll catch a wahoo” or ” today, i’ll catch a talakitok”. But in doing so i get too stressed in catching that I end up getting skunked. hehehe. Now, when I go out and fish, i go out and enjoy the day. Enjoy the environment, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the company and enjoy the act of fishing itself. At the end of the day, I feel better knowing that I spent a good day in a nice place with a good company, whether i have fish on my cooler or not. I’ll be a hypocrite if I say that I won’t feel great if I go home with fish in the cooler. Yeah, I’ll be definitely feel alot better, but at the end, it doesn’t seem to matter anymore. (masaya kung may huli, pag wala eh di bumili.. hehehe)

Although I find it cool to be like Capt. Ben. Chancey and Capt. Blair and host your own fishing show but I don’t see them as mark. They’re pretty much like a childhood dream to be pilot, an astronaut or a fireman.

That was pretty much it. Fishing is supposed to be a form of relaxation, a stress reliever, a thing to do to unwind and get away from the monotony of everyday life.. hehehe.. OK, ok, I know a few readers out there will say that this is a lame excuse for going out fishing and not being able to bring home any. Well, it may be an excuse, but it is certainly not lame..

I guess most of us who have experienced fighting a fish on a trolling setup without a fighting belt would reckon that it’s a pain in the belt area. And to those who are new to fishing, a fighting belt would be at the least of the shopping list. This is a quick and dirty DIY rod belt, a cheap alternative to a fighting belt.

It was a day before a fishing trip and I knew that we were going to troll and jig and I don’t have a fighting belt. I found myself in Ace Hardware looking at anything that could help me out in that area. I came upon the PVC conduits section and found some T-connectors and nipples. I remember seeing T-butt fishing rods in one of those sexy, itsi weeny bikini clad girls going fishing videos at you tube and an idea struck me.

So I bought a size 32 T-Connector at P21.00 and a pair of fitting nipples for P10.00 each so all in all, it cost me around P40.00

PVC T-Connector and Nipples

All you need to do is insert the nipples on each side of the T-Connector (as pictured below). You can apply PVC Blue or super glue if desired.

Attach nipples to T-Connector

The next step is to drill a hole in the middle of the connector so you can insert a screw. If you dont have a drill, you can heat up a big nail and use it to punch a hole. This screw will act as the guide to your rod’s gimbal. Make sure that this screw is vertical, or else your rod will not sit vertical when you mount it.

Gimbal Guide

Try it on for size…

Try it on for size..

You can rest the rod support on either left side or right side of your waist, depends if you are using a spinning outfit or an overhead one. Works great if even if you are doing short strokes or even long ones. Place it in the center if you are trolling..
Refinements: Using it for one outing, I can see a few refinements. You can run a belt right though the insides so it doesn’t fall off. You can also drill the gimbal guide screw so it compensates when your rest it between your waist and thighs.
So there you go.. a cheap alternative to a fighting belt. No more aching bellies when fighting a fish.

Call time was 2:30am at the Shell station in The Fort. Everyone was so excited that everyone was there before 2:30am. I arrived last and just shortly after, 3 cars set out and convoy to Lipa, Batangas were we will be meeting other anglers.

We arrived too early at Lipa, we were expecting to reach Lipa by 5:00am but we were there by 4:00. It was a good time to stop over and have breakfast. I filled myself with a Tocilog and two cups of Barako Coffee.

Arriving at Laiya by 6:00am, we were able to catch a good glimpse of the sunrise. Without wasting time, all thirteen of us were getting ready. After a quick pause for a photo op, we all set sail for offshore fishing.

I was lucky enough to be a boat buddy with JR (1st person on the left). He is an experienced angler, fishing offshore for a couple of years already and has joined several fishing competition. His expertise is a welcome help to a newbie angler like me.

Our boatman was Mang Gilbert. Initially, we were telling him what we wanted to do but he had this attitude problem and does things his way. We only had 6-inch ballyhoos as bait, but he insisted that we get fresh squid as bait. After getting half a kilo of squid ( actually if looked more like 1/3 kilo), we set out to the open sea.

Mang Gilbert’s Dorado Fishing Technique:

On the way to our fishing spot, Mang Gilbert looked at our terminal tackle, we were basically armed with wire leaders and plugs but he quickly told us to bring out 1/0 or 3/0 hooks, swivels and thin mono. I handed over a 1/0 pioneer stainless steel hook, a 25lb mono and a 60lb swivel to Mang Gilbert and he rigged out a meter long line with a hook on one end and a swivel on the other and hooked a fresh squid on the body. He told us that he will do a slow troll around bouys and we should troll a our line around 10-15 meters out, with open spool and the line resting on our fore fingers. Once we feel a bite (the line would literally slide itself from your finger), wait for 3-5 seconds then close the spool and jerk the rod to set the hook.

The Dorado’s bite:

JR had the first bite but he was over eager and closed the spool too early and failed to set the hook. But on the second bite, he was able to set the hook! The water splashed and there it was, a good sized Dorado dancing on top of the water. A short 5-10 minute fight and we boated our first catch for the day.

I didn’t have luck on the 1st and 2nd bouy . The first bite came on the third bouy, I made the same mistake as what JR did, closing the spool too early and ended up losing the fish. JR was fighting a dorado that time so I quicky rigging the squid and cast it out. Just a few seconds after the bait hit the water, I felt the like tug away from my fingers. Conciously, I counted one…… two….. three.. four.. five. snaped the spool back and snaped the rod back and Boom! I saw a Dorado leap out from the water as it went back in the water, my reel was screetching hard (I forgot to set the drag hehehe.. ). I slowly increased the drag on my reel while keeping a good steady pull on the rod. The dorado did not want to give up the fight, he was still rolling and leaping. Mang Gilbert motioned me to reel it in, but I was a little hessistant since I only had a 24lb line and my rod by bent hard. I slowly pulled back and reeled in.. pulled back and reeled in and after a few minutes, Mang Gilbert gaffed a good sized dorado. Woohooo!

We went from bouy after bouy, JR landed another but no luck for me. There was this one bouy that we had so much luck. JR set a dorado and shortly after, I felt a bite! We landed two fish and circled the bouy again and again, both JR and I got a bite. I think we chanced upon a school of dorados. Cast.. bite… set… fight.. land.. cast… bite.. set.. fight.. land.. DAMN, it was dorado frenzy! There were a couple of times that I would feel a bite.. set the hook and after the initial dance of the fish, the line would go slack.. buggers! : It was almost noon time when the dorado fenzy ended, we headed back to shore for lunch. I opened the cooler and counted 9 dorados all in all. I was pondering why I lost a couple of strikes and then I noticed that JR was using a bigger sized hook, probably around 2/0 or 3/0 size. Lesson of the day, use 3/0 hooks to ensure a good set.

On the way back to shore, JR was telling me that he was intrigued on how the others fared. Upon arriving the shore, we were surprized that we landed the most number of fish and the others, unfortunately, didn’t fare too well. Then Bien brought out a huge grouper and kept silent on how he caught it… hmm…

After lunch, everyone was eager to set out to sea again. JR decided that we go trolling, which Mang Gilbert agreed to. From the boat dock, we set up our trolling lure with wire leaders. JR had a CD15 Rapala and I had a Storm Deep Thunder 15. We trolled towards Locoloco Pt and beyond.. admiring the great view of the widestretch beach front while waiting for a bite. I was telling JR that I’m happy even to watch an experienced angler fight it out with a real game fish. Past Locoloco Pt., JR’s reel started to scream. Mang Gilbert shouted.. ISDA! ISDA! JR immediately pulled out his rod from the holder and reeled it in. The lure was running deep into the water and we couldn’t see it nor a fish. When the lure eventually appeared, no fish. It could have been just a snag or a big one that got away. Mang Gilbert steered the bangka and trolled the other way around. I was wary that my line or my rod will break because even while trolling, my 8-ft Pioneer ULUA rod was really bent over and my Tica Streamstar LT4500 reel was set at 1 click below 100% drag and it was a great time to change lures. I rigged two plastic squid with a 3oz diving sinker. I can almost hear my tackle say thank you to me.. hehehe. We trolled towards the other side of Siguyan bay and still no luck. On our third pass, I changed lures again and used a smaller plug, a “Sucker” Storm Deep Thunder 11.

Landing the Trevally:

Trolling is a very anxious way of fishing, you can troll for hours and not get any bite. After getting bored and it seemed that trolling was not in any way productive and I was tempted to tell JR that we’ll try jigging or bottom fishing instead. The humming of the bangka’s motor and the up-down motion of the sea is very condusive to sleep. I was dozing off in the bangka, near Malagundi Pt, I was awoke with the voice of Mang Gilbert and JR shouting “ISDA, ISDA!” At first, I looked at JR’s reel to see if it was running. It wasn’t and when I looked at my reel, it was the one screaming. I took hold of the rod and I didn’t know what to do.. do I reel it in? increase the drag? what? Instinct told me to let it run a little while slowly pulling the rod back and see if I can reel it in. I was too eager to land the fish and few minutes later, I decided to increase the drag and slowly reel it in. The rod was heavy when I pulled it back, pushed forward while reeling in, pull back, push forward reel in. After several push-pull-reel, the fish surfaced and it was a trevally! Mang Gilbert exclaimed “talakitok… talakitok!” When he landed the fish, it was a good sized one and my grin was bigger than ever.

A HUGE WAHOO!

After that adrenalin rush, we went back trolling again and JR changed his lure to smaller one, a rapalla CD11. It was again, a long troll… The sun was already near the horizon when my reel screamed again. I had a hard time getting the rod off the holder and as it was really heavy, I almost lost my footing in doing so. Again, I let it run for while then pulled-pushed-reel in. A few meters from the boat, it appeared.. A HUGE WAHOO! (actually it was not that huge, a 8lb one, but to me it was.. hehehe). I had a hard time controlling the fish, it was moving left and right of the boat and under it. Mang Gilbert was looking after the line so that it doesn’t get snagged the propeller and lose the fish. The fish suddenly swam towards the front of the boat. JR was nearer to the rear of the boat asked for the rod. He literally dunked the rod underwater to control the fish. Many thanks to JR for the help, if not for his instinct, I would have lost the fish. Finally we landed the fish… hehehe.. my biggest catch ever, an 8lb WAHOO ( ok, I mentioned it already earlier.. sorry) or should I say our biggest catch since it took alot help from JR. Thanks again Bro!

A Bill fish? In your dreams bro.

After that 2nd adrenaline rush, Mang Gilbert decided to call it a day. Since we were still in the deep, we still had our trolling lures out. We noticed that my rod suddenly went slack and there was a short scream at the reel then it stopped. We all though it was just a snag or something and didn’t mind it at all. We continued to troll for a few minutes when Mang Gilbert told us to reel in our lures since we were nearing shallow water already. I reeled in my lure and I noticed that it was heavy. A fish? Nah.. it wasn’t my birthday that day to get too lucky. Although while reeling in, I noticed that it suddenly it went light. Ok, no fish.

While reading the net, I read something about Bill Fishes and Sail fishes. One website mentioned that when trolling for bill fish or sail fish, be observant of the rod and reel for a quick slack and short scream. When it does, one should set the hook by tugging the rod hard. Bill fishes are known to hit the fish first with their bill before lunging forward and swallowing the prey. After swallowing the prey, they don’t usually swim back to the opposite direction and continue on swimming in the same direction.

Could I have gotten a bite from a bill fish? I guess I’ll never know now. Better go back to Laiya and try my luck again. hehehe.. 2nd round gentlemen?

My catch for the day, an 8-lb Wahoo and a 3-lb trevally and a couple of juvenile Dorados.

There was a lot of commotion on the beach as the anglers went ashore. Everyone was busy, proudly showing his catch to everyone else or merely looking at someone else’s catch. Here are some photos of everyone’s haul.
